Bill Cosby and the black community

Bill Cosby is making headlines again. This time he was speaking to a room full of activists. He said:

”that black children are running around not knowing how to read or write and "going nowhere."
He also had harsh words for struggling black men, telling them: "Stop beating up your women because you can't find a job."

Cosby made headlines in May when he upbraided some poor blacks for their grammar and accused them of squandering opportunities the civil rights movement gave them. He shot back Thursday, saying his detractors were trying in vain to hide the black community's "dirty laundry."

"Let me tell you something, your dirty laundry gets out of school at 2:30 every day, it's cursing and calling each other n------ as they're walking up and down the street," Cosby said during an appearance at the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition & Citizenship Education Fund's annual conference.

"They think they're hip," the entertainer said. "They can't read; they can't write. They're laughing and giggling, and they're going nowhere."
Bill seems to understand that many have chosen to turn a blind eye and deaf ear to the root of the problems within the black community. In the past the black leaders have recognized the problems, whether it be poverty, single mothers, high school drop outs, drugs etc, and passed the blame on to others or have just excused them as cultural differences. But what Bill is saying is wholly different. He is saying that these kids need to stay in school, learn to read, stop having babies out of wedlock, stop beating women, talk appropriately, and move ahead in life. No external blame attached.

Bill understands the fact that there is an unwillingness within the black leadership to address the problem. They don’t want to air their dirty laundry. The black leadership in America needs to foster the same ideals that Martin Luther King did during the civil rights movement.

Martin Luther King believed the black community only needed the same basic rights that everyone else has, granted to them by our creator. Beyond that, the black community needed no one else’s help. They could pull themselves up by their bootstraps, and be successful in life and the pursuit of happiness, ultimately becoming part of the fabric of America. Maybe Bill can make Dr. Kings dream come alive again.
